Yes, we teach by the official NMJL Rules (152 tiles), AND we teach American Mahjong with blanks. We inform our students of the differences and allow them to choose which style they prefer to play during their lessons. We then teach to their preference but speak to the alternative, as we believe it's beneficial for players to be aware of both popular styles. This approach helps ensure that our students may readily adapt to any table they are invited to join!
No, four-player tables are ideal, but not essential to learning mahjong! Mahjong can be taught with various player configurations, so don't worry if your group has three players, or seven, etc. Furthermore, Mahjong Monkey is happy to fill a seat and play while simultaneously teaching.
We typically recommend that new players take a "101" and "102" class. Some players then take comfort in one or more "guided play" sessions, while others feel confident playing independently after learning the essentials during their first two lessons.
All you need is a willingness to learn! We provide everything else that's needed to play mahjong. (Feel welcome to bring any beverage or snack you anticipate wanting during our time together.)

We accept all major credit cards, cash, Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle.
We appreciate that "life happens" and schedules occasionally shift. For private lessons, we do our best to reschedule for a future date. If unable to find an alternative date, then we will retain your 20% deposit and donate it to Cincinnati Cancer Advisors. For group lessons, open-play and events, we defer to the cancellation policy of our partner hosts (e.g. the venue where the lesson is taking place).
